Denver Art Museum - What is Modern?

If you are an admirer or collector of  Modern and/or contemporary art, design, or architecture, you have to visit these museums in Denver:  The Denver Art Museum, MCA Denver (Museum of Contemporary Art - Denver), and The Kirkland Museum.

My wife, Nicole, and I went to the Denver Art Museum today to view the exhibit - What is Modern? This exhibits runs through March 24, 2013.   The exhibit is small, so if you don't enjoy many variations of art, do not spend your money on this one exhibit.  There are other modern exhibitions including  "Herbert Bayer 1900 to 1928: The Bauhaus and Pre-Bauhaus Years", "Olivetti: Innovation & Identity", "El Anatsui", and  "Potters of Precision: The Coors Porcelain Company" to name a few.  Viewing all of the exhibits together is worth the admission.  Next weekend we are touring "Becoming Van Gogh".

Here is a quick picture overview along with some of my favorite pieces at the What is Modern? exhibition.

What you see is what you get.  This is the exhibit along with a few smalls not shown?  As you can see, most of the modern furniture includes chairs.  There is some lighting, graphic design and industrial piecesWith this being said, there are some great "Vintage Modern" chairs included in the show that are on my favorites list.

Frank O Gehry (1929- )  Wiggle Side Chair (1972)
One of my favorite chairs.  Method, Material, Form and Original Design are all included in this chair.  Modern at it finest. Believe it or not, this chair is made out of cardboard.  Gehry developed a process of gluing cardboard together to form massive blocks of cardboard into furniture.  Wow.

Charles and Ray Eames - Lounge Chair (Model LCW) - Herman Miller - 1946
A molded plywood masterpiece.  Yes, the Eamses created many beautiful Modern pieces, but early in their careers, this piece helped change modern furniture design.  Another great!

Gerrit Thomas Rietveld (Dutch 1888-1964) - Zig Zag Chair (1934)
1934 - Really?  What is Modern?  This piece is made of 4 single pieces of wooden rectangles to make a single structure.  This chair follows Ludwig Mies van der Rhohe and Alvar Aalto's freestanding series.  It is a BEAUTY!!

Hans Wagner (Danish 1914-2007) Round Armchair model jh501 (1949)
Mass Production Versus Scandinavian Design Values.  As many know, there was a push and pull between Scandinavian designers, many of who were cabinet makers and architects with deep rooted design values, AND the mass production designers of America including Eames, Saarinen, and Knoll.  This chair is Wagner's response.  A chair that is simple, yet elegant. A chair with form that creates function.  A masterpiece. I love this chair.

George Nakashima (American 1905-1990) Coffee Table (1971)
Straight out of Pennsylvania and America's vintage studio furniture mecca - New Hope, PA comes this fabulous Nakashima coffee table.  Yes, this piece is from PA, but it should stay in CO.  This single piece of walnut slab, supported by one slab leg and one tapered leg, is rustic, yet simple with Japanese styling, yet american.  It appears as if a Colorado pioneer hammered this table and threw it together, yet it is too defined, finished and thought through - it is simply modern.  Nakashima - a master modern, rustic carpenter.

Denver Public Library - across the street from the Denver Art Museum
What is Modern? Denver has done a fantastic job with public architecture.  This is Denver's flagship public library across the street from the Denver Art Museum.

Week-End Round Up - Vintage Sale & Bertoia

What a weekend......

We had our first ever "Vintage Hoarding" Sale.  All in all it was a great success.  We met many new pickers and "hoarders".  It was a rainy weekend, but we managed to pull it off.  Here is Mike running to set up his Curtis Mathes stereo console.....I will be happy to see this piece gone. Not that it isn't a admirable piece, we moved it at least 10 times.

After the sale we met up with our friend Dan.  He had this set of vintage modern Knoll Harry Bertoia wire chairs sitting in his garage for quite some time.  The cushions are not in the best condition, I probably over paid, but who cares. The frames show little wear and they are now in my collection.  These will be available soon.

Also from Dan, I picked up this Modeline Danish Modern (Although Not Danish - It has Danish styling) mid century Modern cylinder table lamp.  This piece will be available soon!

A signed C. Jere aspen tree leaf wall sculpture.  I went to a house call and decided to purchase this one.  As some know, I'm not a huge fan of Jere.  There are a few pieces of theirs that I truly appreciate, but most seem a little too retro for me.  However, this is a beautiful, sleek, vertical modern piece I admire.  I might hang this one in my home.

At the same house call with the Jere above, I picked up this Kent Coffey Tableau low boy dresser.  We kept this piece....for now.  I also have the tall dresser and mirror.

A few other chairs I picked up.  A Thonet and a couple chrome sling chairs in the Marcel Breuer style.

I purchased the blue danish styling side chair in the style of LB Koford Larsen's Elizabeth Chair (above), the danish styling buffet / sideboard (above) and an extendable slat bench / coffee table from my friend Mackenzie  - Sight Unseen.  I will pick these items up this week and determine what to do with them.

Eames Eiffel Yellow Fiberglass Chair

I recently picked up and sold this Herman Miller Eames Eiffel Molded Fiberglass Chair - FAST.  It went to a home in Ohio.   My client is looking for more of these in  black on yellow IF you have any, I'm interested.  - Sold

Danish Finds....Plus More

I purchased several pieces from an Estate a few weeks ago and this is the first opportunity I've had to highlight the chairs from the sale plus other items available soon...

I will post more early this week...Stay Tuned!!

The most unique chairs I have owned.  A fabulous pair of Ma & Pa teak vintage Danish Modern Lounge Chairs.   These chairs are unique and in incredible condition for their age.  I haven't determined a price as I'm still researching the maker.  They are a mix between Arts and Crafts, California Craft and Modern. I have a reputable dealer who thinks they are Tobia Scarpa valued at $5K+ retail. Both of us are still unsure. I'm happy to have them in the collection.

A pair of Hans Olsen by Frem Rojle Three Leg Dining / Side Chairs.  I picked these up and added them to my personal collection.

A wonderful, in great condition teak, bent plywood vintage side chair.  Early Danish Modern.  This piece will be available soon.

I traded this great Danish Modern, Cylinder Floor Lamp, along with my Rubber Maid storage shed (I just built two larger ones) to my good friend Mike (www,MidCenturyMike.com) for a Facade John Stuart bedroom set  that needs a little work. Mike will probably have this available soon!

Seven Vintage, Industrial Stacking File Cabinets, with a retro wired swag lamp.  The swag lamp was originally white, but I painted it orange for a little extra eye sauce.  It turned out great and will be available this weekend at our vintage sale in Lakewood!!!  I have haven't determined what I'm going to do with the file cabinets....

Orange Wired Swag Lamp.  Cool.  This item is available!!
